Banding Together For Patient Safety
Because of concerns that variations in the colors used for “alert” wristbands in hospitals may cause confusion and lead to patient harm, the AHA began a statewide wristband standardization quality and patient safety initiative under which participating hospitals will standardize the wristband colors used to PURPLE for DNR, RED for allergy, and YELLOW for fall risk. The AHA does not advocate that hospitals begin to use color-coded wristbands if they do not already use them, but those facilities that use wristbands are encouraged to use the standard colors.
The following resources are available for hospitals to use in educating patients and staff about color-coded alert wristband policy changes:
- Wristband Standardization Toolkit
- PowerPoint Presentation
- Sample Wristband Policy
- Sample Patient Refusal Form
